Project title: New treatment for the recovery of organic iodine
Acronym: TRYO
Consortium: JUSTESA IMAGEN, S.A.U., Ambiente y Residuos S.L., Universidad Autónoma de Madrid

Iodine derivatives are used by different industries in their production processes, notably the pharmaceutical, phytosanitary and image diagnosis industries.

In virtually all cases, the management of the waste generated in such processes does not involve the recovery of iodine, but rather its inertisation and transport to controlled deposit sites, essentially due to two factors: the unavailability of suitable technology to carry out such recovery and the short-term interests of waste management contractors.

Moreover, the Iodine is usually present in combination, requiring its mobilisation to the reaction medium prior to any recovery treatment. For these reasons, there hardly exist any developed processes for the recovery of iodine.

The presence of waste in which the concentration of iodine is sufficiently high to make its recovery a priority is not a common occurrence. Waste containing iodine is usually associated with healthcare processes and it is usually (Law 22/2011, of 28 July, on waste and contaminated soils) assimilated to urban waste or classified as hazardous. However, the volume of high-iodine concentration waste generated in our country should not be underestimated. Although it is not a common type of waste, when we consider the various contrast agent production plants and the subsequent hospital waste, the quantities of waste involved are in the order of hundreds of tonnes per year.

With the aim of addressing this problem, a cooperative project was proposed, to be carried out by a multidisciplinary consortium with extensive and proven experience in the field. The consortium, led by JUSTESA IMAGEN, S.A., a leading domestic and world player in the manufacture and sale of radiological contrast agents, and also including AMBIENTE Y RESIDUOS, S.L. (AYRE), specialising in industrial environmental management, and Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), possesses the necessary know-how, infrastructure and equipment to ensure the successful completion of the project.

The aim of the TRYO project is to design and develop an innovative high-yield process for the recovery of iodine from industrial chemical waste for the purpose of reducing the generation of potentially hazardous waste and recovering raw materials of key importance in the production process, thereby allowing the gainful exploitation of the waste and the implementation of more sustainable and environmentally friendly manufacturing processes.

The successful achievement of this goal will contribute to creating major social returns, enhance the competitiveness of JUSTESA and of AMBIENTE Y RESIDUOS as well as the efficiency of the production process, and promote the application of scientific and technology advances to reinforce the environmental sustainability of waste treatment thanks to the collaboration with the UNIVERSIDAD AUTÓNOMA DE MADRID.

The project will be carried out between 1 October 2015 and 30 September 2017, with a total cost of €470,471.60.

The IODINE project, with reference RTC-2015-36118-5, was financed by the Spanish MINISTRY OF ECONOMY AND COMPETITIVENESS under the RETOS COLABORACIÓN: Proyectos I+D+i (COLLABORATION CHALLENGES: R&D&I Projects) grant category, and co-financed by the European Union’s ERDF fund. The programme under which the project was carried out has the aim of Fostering technological development, innovation and quality research.
